Yesterday I visited the Chislehurst WWI Wall of Remembrance in Sainsbury’s. The wall commemorates family members who bravely played their part in the Great War, and has been put together by the fantastic volunteers of the Chislehurst Society and the British Legion, with help from the kind staff of Sainsbury’s Chislehurst branch.
I was proud to add my grandfather’s name to the wall, Bill Chaston - who served with 4th Battalion Middlesex Regiment and fought at Ypres and Passchendaele - and customers and local residents alike are welcome to add their own ‘brick’ or photograph, paying tribute in doing so to the sacrifices our ancestors made in this centenary year.
The wall will remain in place for the rest of the week, and I would encourage you to look in if you’re passing by. It really is a great communal effort by the team, and stands as a truly moving commemoration to all who fought in the Great War. My thanks to the hard work of the Chislehurst Society and the British Legion, as well as the staff and managers of Sainsbury’s for their help in organising the event.
